Rabat – Moroccos Capital

Rabat is the capital of Morocco. It is very modern, and European according to the other cities in Morocco. There is a theatre, cinemas, coffees, a zoo, McDonalds, like every city in the world. Rabat has a huge train station, post station and big boulevards. Also you can find there office towers, Rabat is a trade center. But still if it’s modern – cats are everywhere. ^-^

In the Ville Nouvelle I found a really cool fruit bar – Le Gout de Fruit – they have around 30 different fruits and you can mix them like you want.

Medina

On the way from the Ville Nouvelle to the Medina is the Marché Central, where you can buy food and fake brand clothes and sun glasses. Rabat Medina is nice, but not as beautiful as the Medina in Fes.

Kasbah des Oudaïas

Rabat has a beautiful fortress called Kasbah des Oudaïas which lays at the River Bou Regreg and the Atlantic Ocean. It has 10m high and 2.5m wide walls and a huge entrance called Bab Oudaïas. The houses in the Kasbah are painted blue and white, and there are also some pirate towers. Besides there is a museum for jewelry and an andalusian garden.

Mausoleum Mohammed V. and Tour Hassan

The Area of the Mausoleum Mohammed and the Hassan Tower is the most important national monument in Morocco.  The Area is guarded by men in uniforms and horses. The Hassan Tower was build 1191 and is named after the 5th Kalif and grandson of Mohammed, originally they wanted to build a mosque, but it didn’t work out.

The mausoleum is one of the most beautiful buildings in Morocco, it was designed by a Vietnamese architect called Vo Toan and build in the 60’s.  It is the tomb of King Mohammed V.

Palace Quarter

In the palace quarter you can only go through some Gates, and the guards always check your passport. Also you are not allowed to go into the palace and policemen don’t like seeing if you take photos.

Oued Bou Regreg

The Bou Regreg is a river which flows through Morocco, it divides the city of Rabat and Salé. Oued or Wadi is a river which has only water after heavy rainfall. From Rabat to Sale you can sometimes walk, if there is not so much water in the Oued or walk over a bridge by foot, bike or go by tram (they have a very modern tram in Rabat).
